COURSE INFORMATION
With regard to their respective grade-level, students will be introduced to Technology in the following categories:
Basic Computer Operations
Keyboarding
Productivity (Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerbuilder)
Communications, Research and Thinking Skills
Social, Ethical and Legal
The Archdiocese provides proficiency guidelines. The guidelines can be found at
http://www.catholiccincinnati.org/schools/PDF/08-11TechStandardsCompetencies.pdf
Students will participate in hands-on learning, be given assignment and be expected to meet deadlines. In addition, students will use Technology to facilitate learning in their subject matter classes (Reading, Math, Science, History, etc.).
GRADING
St. Vivian School does not issue a Technology grade on the report card. However, assignments may be graded to let students and parents know how the student performed. For the Technology Award (see below), certain assignments will be graded—students will not be informed about which assignments will be graded.
When assignments are graded, the standard St. Vivian School grading scale will be used (see your school handbook).
TECHNOLOGY AWARD
As you know, Computer/Technology does not appear on students' grade report at St. Vivian School. To provide some incentive for studying Technology, I established a Technology Award. As Technology appears on students' report cards when they reach the 9th grade, the Technology Award will be limited to 7th and 8th graders.
I will evaluate selected assignments completed by 7th and 8th graders. The student with the highest passing grade average for these assignments will receive a gift certificate of nominal value as well as an award certificate.
CLASS RULES (Any violations of these rules will be considered an infraction of
St. Vivian School’s Student Code of Conduct and will result in a demerit).
This list is not meant to be all-inclusive and can change without notice.
- Students will remain in their assigned seats, at all times.
- Students are expected to take restroom and drinking fountain breaks prior to or after Computer Lab. Exceptions will be made in accordance with school health documentation.
- Unless officially arranged by the school, students will not be allowed to leave the lab for other classrooms or the library.
- Show respect toward others at all times.
- There is to be no talking when someone else, including the teacher, is talking. In general, conversation should pertain to the subject matter being discussed. As, for the most part, students are expected to do their own work, so conversation should be kept at a minimum.
- There is to be no pushing, shoving or other horseplay.
- Students should not tamper with or deface computer equipment. Students may be required to pay for lost, stolen, or damaged equipment.
- If a student needs to ask a question, relative to the assignment or discussion, he or she should raise their hand, then wait to be recognized.
- Students will come to class with a blue or black pen or pencil and notebook paper.
- Students are in the lab to learn--Computer Lab time is not recess. Any free-time during Computer Lab time will be awarded based on the amount of work completed.
- A number of assignments involve the use of the Internet for research. No student should be found on a web-site that is not educational and related to the assignment.
- There is no eating or drinking in the Computer Lab.
